Vocabulary: Morass

"'I am sure you cannot long be content to pass your leisure in solitude, and to devote your working hours to a monotonous labour wholly void of stimulus; any more than I can be content,' he added, with emphasis, 'to live here buried in morass, pent in with mountains'" (362).

St John is talking to Jane about her new teaching position at his school. He is saying that she must be entertained and have intelligent work just as he needs to get out of Morton and see the world. Morass  is a marsh or swamp, but it can also mean a confused situation. However, based on the context, it means swamp in this quote.

My parents came across a morass when they went hiking through the hills of England.
